Lake Naivasha is a serene freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by yellow-fever acacia forest and papyrus reed beds teeming with wildlife. Unlike the alkaline lakes, Naivasha supports a rich freshwater ecosystem that has made it one of Kenya's most important birding destinations — over 400 species have been recorded, including the iconic African fish eagle, pelicans, cormorants, and herons. Hippo pods lounge in the shallows and emerge at dusk to graze on the lawns of the lakeside lodges. Crescent Island Game Sanctuary offers one of Kenya's most unusual experiences: a guided walking safari on a flooded volcano crater island where giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and waterbuck roam freely with no predators — allowing close-up encounters on foot. Hell's Gate National Park, accessible by bicycle, lies just a short drive away and features dramatic gorges, geothermal steam vents, and a population of rare Lammergeier vultures. Naivasha perfectly complements a Nakuru or Maasai Mara safari as part of a Rift Valley circuit.
