Diani Beach stretches 17 kilometres along the southern Kenyan coast, consistently rated among Africa's best beaches and a regular finalist in international travel awards. The beach is backed by ancient coral rag forest sheltering a remarkable population of Angolan colobus monkeys — one of the most endangered primates in Africa — that move freely through the hotel gardens and treetops. The Indian Ocean here is shallow, warm, and spectacularly clear, protected by an offshore coral reef that creates ideal conditions for snorkelling, scuba diving, kitesurfing, and deep-sea fishing. The coastal town retains a strong Swahili character: Arabic-influenced architecture, dhow boat trips at sunset, fresh crab at the beach restaurants, and the ancient ruins of Kongo Mosque. Diani is the natural and most rewarding way to combine safari with beach, just 40 minutes by light aircraft from Nairobi or Mombasa.
